What is Collaboration?
Special Education can be serviced in many different ways, but one very strong and critical area is through cooperative learning and collaboration. Collaboration can be defined as the following:
- Co-teaching, or collaboration occurs when two or more educators provide instruction to students with varying abilities in the same physical area. These professionals are partners in the education process and actively and jointly plan and implement curriculum. (Dettmer, Thurston, & Dyck, 1993).
In cooperation with the classroom teachers, you could find a variety of six different types of Co-teaching in your student's classroom:
- Complementary Instruction
- Station teaching
- Parallel teaching
- Alternative teaching
- Team teaching
