    Middle school students excel at America Bowl

    First Place teamTwo Upper St. Clair middle school teams captured the top spots in the 6-8 division of the America Bowl history competition on Thursday, Feb. 15, 2024.

    Finishing first was a team of eighth graders from Fort Couch Middle School – Malo Dubreil, Raana Parchuri, John Whitman and Joey Wyse. A team of Boyce Middle School sixth graders –Luka Beric, Eamon Castrodale, Mateo Lin and Ivan Yanov – placed second.

    Thirty teams representing schools from throughout the region competed in the annual event, which is organized by the Baldwin-Whitehall School District. The America Bowl challenges students in grades 3-5 and 6-8 to answer both team and individual questions within six categories – Pittsburgh History, States, U.S. Presidents, Things to See in America, Early America, and Government. 

    Second Place teamIn addition to the teams that placed first and second, five other teams from Upper St. Clair participated in the America Bowl:

    • Grade 5:  Grant Gibbs, Drew Heitman, Aarna Parmar and Penn Pascarella
    • Grade 7: Kayla Fibbi, Kate McClintock-Comeaux, Clara McLean and Maddy Zevallos
    • Grade 7: Will Kreizenbeck, Owen Maher, Avik Pandey and Vivek Sattuluri
    • Grade 7: Enoch Katru, Aadi Kaushik, Finn McKigney and Seth Pedretti
    • Grade 8: Aanya Agrawal, Maria Alfredon-Themudo, Ahana Mendhi and Suhavi Singh

    The Upper St. Clair students were coached by gifted education teachers Thomas Yochum, Fort Couch Middle School, and Sherri Garvey, Boyce Middle School.
