Boyce project spreads kindness and compassion

Boyce Friendship BagsThe holiday spirit is alive and well at Upper St. Clair’s Boyce Middle School. The fifth and sixth graders are hard at work spreading kindness and compassion to others through the school’s annual Friendship Gift Bag service project.

Organized by the Boyce Middle School counselors, Amy Antonio and Tonia Autieri, this year’s partnering organization is the Children's Home of Pittsburgh and the Lemieux Family Center. Students are providing gifts for children who are supported by the organization’s many programs, including adoption services, a pediatric specialty hospital, Child's Way daycare services and counseling services.

Different items are being collected within each homeroom, including infant toys, night lights, fidget spinners/toys, books, hats and mittens. In addition, the school has received numerous gift cards for the organization’s adoption/foster program. The gift bags are being assembled by students during guidance class.

“We are so enthusiastic to help the children and families at the Children's Home this holiday season,” Mrs. Autieri said. “The holiday season can be joyful and exciting for many, but for some of the families at the Children's Home, it can be a time of uncertainty. With medically fragile children and the unknowns of what comes next, we are happy to bring some positivity and joy to them.”

The gift bags will be delivered to the Children's Home via school bus on Thursday, Dec 21. A group of fifth and sixth graders will be randomly selected to help Mrs. Antonio and Mrs. Autieri with the delivery.

“Our students and the community have gone above and beyond to support our project, and we cannot wait to deliver the bags to the Children's Home next week,” Mrs. Autieri said.

The Friendship Gift Bag community service project has been an important component of the Boyce Middle School culture for more than 20 years. To support this endeavor, contact Mrs. Autieri at tautieri@uscsd.k12.pa.us.
