Nineteen Upper St. Clair High School seniors were recently recognized as Commended Students in the 2020 National Merit Scholarship Program.
Carly E. Abraham, Vivek J. Babu, Sarah M. Besser, Claire L. Chen, Jason T. Choi, Jonathan H. Clark, Samuel J. Dvorin, Devan S. Ekbote, Gavin G. Genter, Eri Hayakawa, Katherine R. Hobart, Matthew S. Hornak, Dylan R. Jenny, Suemin Lee, Kathleen M. McCurrie, Benjamin H. Nelson, Benjamin M. Pribanic, Aleksa Rodic and Emmeline G. Wetzel scored in the top three percent of the more than 1.5 million students who completed the 2018 Preliminary SAT, the National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test last October.
“Upper St. Clair High School students consistently demonstrate a commitment to excellence — in academics, in athletics, and in the arts,” Dr. Timothy M. Wagner, Upper St. Clair High School principal, said. “This fall we celebrate 19 students whose hard work has earned them national recognition from among 1.6 million student entrants across the United States. I join these students’ families and the entire community in celebrating their success.”
These 19 Upper St. Clair seniors join about 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation who are being recognized for their exceptional academic promise.
“Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.”
Earlier this month the National Merit Scholarship Corporation announced the program’s Semifinalists, which included six Upper St. Clair seniors. In total, 25 Upper St. Clair students earned recognition as a Semifinalist or Commended Student.
