Students share leadership lessons in Belize
In early June, eight Upper St. Clair High School students and four teachers traveled to Placencia, Belize to work in conjunction with the community’s school as part of USC's Leadership Academy. Student participants included rising seniors Eden Auslander, Haley Beardsley, Gavin Genter, Lauren Hart, Joey Ioli, Catherine O'Connor, Gabi Spina and Jami Stout.
Students in the culminating 'Phase IV' of the four-year Leadership Academy have the option to apply to teach in Belize as they round out their time with the academy. The eight USC students on the trip served as facilitators for a week in the local grade school, taking over teaching duties each day and working with their students to practice the core values exemplified by quality leaders.
“The annual trip is a highlight not only for USC students who are challenged to step outside of their comfort zone as they design curriculum and take over instruction for 20 or more youngsters, but also for the Belizean students who enjoy the week filled with hands-on learning,” Russ Hoburg, high school science teacher and Leadership Academy facilitator, said.
