Senior competes in Penn Relays
Upper St. Clair High School senior Harvey Kane finished 13th in the long jump event at the 123rd Penn Relay Carnival on April 27-29, 2017, at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. His jump measured 6.69 meters (21-11.5 ft).
“Entrance into this meet is not an easy task and requires athletes to meet particular standards during their track and field year,” Matt Cosgrove, track and field coach, said.
In February, Harvey captured first place in the long jump at the 2017 Pennsylvania Track & Field Coaches Association Indoor State Championships – qualifying him for the Penn Relays. With a mark of 23 feet and half an inch, Harvey became the first USC athlete to win an Indoor Track State Championship and the only USC long jumper to ever hit the 23 feet milestone.
Harvey’s win at the indoor state meet earned him a spot as one of 22 competitors for the Long Jump at the Penn Relays. Competitors in this event came from Jamaica, Bahamas, Barbados, Maryland, Delaware, New York, Virginia and New Jersey.
“The Upper St. Clair coaching staff is extremely proud of Harvey’s accomplishments at the Penn Relays,” Coach Cosgrove said. “We look forward to his continued success as he finishes out this season.”
The Penn Relays, first held in 1895, is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States. The three-day event hosts top high school, collegiate and professional/Olympic athletes from throughout the country and abroad.
Harvey, a captain of the track and field team, plans to continue his academic and athletic career at Duquesne University.
