USC welcomes Notre Dame Concert Band
Concert set for May 13
The Upper St. Clair music department will host the University of Notre Dame Concert Band on Saturday, May 13, 2017. The day will culminate in a public concert at 7:30 p.m. in the high school theatre. Admission is $5 and may be purchased at the door.
Throughout the day Notre Dame students will be conducting music clinics and mentoring students from the Fort Couch symphonic wind ensemble and the high school wind ensemble. In addition, the Upper St. Clair band directors, Don Pickell and Dr. John Seybert, will be collaborating with Notre Dame’s band leadership including Dr. Ken Dye, director of bands and professor of music; Larry Dwyer, assistant director of bands and director of jazz studies; and Alison Thigpen, assistant band director.
The evening concert will showcase the Notre Dame Concert Band as well as the Upper St. Clair High School Wind Ensemble and the Fort Couch Middle School Symphonic Wind Ensemble.
“It is a great honor for such a prestigious university concert band to select our school district to share its talents, students and staff with us,” Karen Boston, Upper St. Clair Band Parent Association event coordinator, said. “We want to invite our community and surrounding communities to enjoy this wonderful music experience. Also, we would like to thank the University of Notre Dame Band by showing our gratitude by filling up the seats in our theater.”
The Upper St. Clair concert is part of the University of Notre Dame Concert Band’s four-day, four-stop spring tour that includes Kalamazoo, Mich. on May 12; Upper St. Clair on May 13; Erie on May 14; and Cleveland on May 15.
Each year more than 500 Notre Dame students participate in concert bands, chamber ensembles, jazz bands and athletic bands. A part of Notre Dame since 1845, the band performs concerts, music for liturgies, graduation ceremonies, and athletic events; and most notably, the 380-member Fighting Irish Marching Band performs at every home football game.
