Two USC musicians among 11 winners of the Young Artists Auditions
Two Upper St. Clair High School juniors were named among the 11 winners of the 2017 Young Artists Auditions, sponsored by the Pittsburgh Concert Society. Violinist Minori Hayakawa and pianist Ariana Chiu earned the opportunity to perform in a recital on March 26 at Carnegie Mellon University and will each receive an Anna and Benjamin Perlow Scholarship to help further their musical education.
Auditions, which were held on Jan. 7, 2017, were open to instrumentalists under age 19 and vocalists under 22 living or studying within a 75-mile radius of Pittsburgh. The adjudicator was James Gandre, president of the Manhattan School of Music.
Recitals featuring the 2017 Young Artists Auditions winners will be held on Sunday, March 12 and Sunday, March 26, 2017. The events begin at 2 p.m. at the Kresge Recital Hall, College of Fine Arts, at Carnegie Mellon University in Oakland. A “Meet the Artists” reception follows each concert.

The first concert on March 12 will feature:
- Piano Duo:
- Futen Wang, North Allegheny Intermediate High School
- Yosen Wang, North Allegheny High school
- Well Tempered Trio, coached by Marina Lupinacci, renown piano teacher
- Joseph Comella, violin, home schooled
- Cameron Schepner, piano, Hampton High School
- Chris Fedor, cello, North Allegheny High School
- Eric Wang, piano, Ingomar Middle School
- Viola duo:
- James Cunningham IV, CAPA
- Devin Moore, Chartiers Valley High School
The winners who will perform on March 26 are:
- Qilin Ye, piano, Shady Side Academy
- William Wang, violin, North Allegheny Intermediate High School
- Devin Moore, viola, Chartiers Valley High School
- Amadeus Quintet coached by Dennis O'Boyle, second violin and assistant principal with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra:
- Ariana Chiu, piano, Upper St. Clair High School
- Joseph Comella, violin, home schooled
- Minori Hayakawa, violin, Upper St. Clair High School
- Yosen Wang, viola, North Allegheny High School
- Chris Fedor, cello, North Allegheny High School
