Volunteers & Required Clearances
The Upper St. Clair School District is grateful for each parent and community member who contributes to the success of students. We have hundreds of volunteers who work in a variety of capacities in our schools. The Child Protective Services Law requires background checks for volunteers in schools and other programs involving children prior to the commencement of service as a volunteer.
The Upper St. Clair School District requires all volunteers to obtain the certifications required by the law Act 15 of 2015:
An exception to the certification requirements is permissible for a current student who volunteers for an event on school grounds that is sponsored by the school in which the student is enrolled as long as the student is not responsible for a child’s welfare and the event is not for children who are in the care of a child-care service. Students who do not meet this exception may need to obtain the certifications outlined above.
- Act 151 Pennsylvania Child Abuse Clearance – no cost
- Act 34 Pennsylvania Criminal History Check – no cost
- Signed Disclosure Statement – no cost (for those who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years or who have obtained their FBI Criminal History report since moving to PA)
Act 114 FBI Criminal History Report – $27.00 (ONLY or those who have not resided in Pennsylvania for the past 10 years)
If you are new to the District as a volunteer, you will be required to obtain your certifications prior to any contact with students. Upon receipt of your clearances, please scan and email the completed clearances to email@example.com - include within the email the name(s) of student(s) for whom you will be volunteering. Volunteers who have volunteered with the district in the past but whose clearances have lapsed will not be permitted to serve as a volunteer until providing the district with updated clearances.
If you have current clearances (dated within the last five (5) years), please scan and email the clearances to firstname.lastname@example.org as soon as possible. You are also required to sign an affirmation that you have not been disqualified from service since the certifications were issued.
Please note: Volunteers are required to obtain new clearances every five (5) years. You are also required to notify the district in writing within 72 hours if you are arrested for or convicted of an offense that would constitute grounds for denying participation as a volunteer, or you are named as a perpetrator in a child abuse report. Willful failure to do so has criminal implications and may jeopardize your ability to volunteer with the district.
In the event financial hardship may deter you from volunteering when clearances are required, please contact your building principal or Amy Pfender, director of student support services, at email@example.com or 412-833-1600 ext. 2062.
The Upper St. Clair School District is working hard to ensure our volunteers meet all legal requirements of volunteering with us. If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Pfender at firstname.lastname@example.org or 412-833-1600 ext. 2062.
