    Background:

    I am a 1997 graduate of Dickinson College in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, with a bachelor's degree in English. I returned to school in 2004 to earn my Master's of Science in Education from Duquesne University. I have taught English at Upper St. Clair High School since 2006 and live in the community with my wife and two daughters.

    Courses Taught:

    ACADEMIC AND MYP ACADEMIC ENGLISH 9: The course emphasizes mastery in literature, composition, oral communication, and language skills. Literature study includes the five major genres: short story, novel, nonfiction, drama, and poetry. Focus is on the acquisition of reading comprehension skills and the ability to identify and analyze the characteristics of each genre. Using the process approach to writing, students write compositions in the informational, explanatory, argumentative, narrative, and creative modes. To develop their oral communication skills, students make both formal and informal presentations, including one formal speech. Language skills include regular vocabulary study and a review of basic grammar, punctuation, and sentence structure.

    Speech and Debate Coach: I have co-managed the Speech and Debate team at the high school since 2007. Currently, I coach the student congress and assist in the speech events of Dramatic and Humorous Interpretation, Original Oratory, and Poetry/ Prose.
