Dear Parents, Guardians and Community Members,
The Pennsylvania Department of Education (PDE) requires all school districts in the state to develop a formal written Strategic Plan. A plan must be submitted to the state every six years with a midpoint progress report to be filed after the third year. I am pleased to report that Upper St. Clair School District’s proposed Strategic Plan is available for public review until March 9, 2009, at which time the plan will be officially adopted by the Board of School Directors and submitted to PDE.
The Strategic Plan will guide our District through the year 2014 by establishing a set of goals focused on future District needs and expectations and identifying and validating community, staff, and student needs and interests. The development of the plan is a vital step in providing direction for the Upper St. Clair School District in making critical educational decisions for our students.
The goals and objectives identified in the initiative were developed through a collaborative process. A steering committee composed of 49 members, including a facilitator, twenty-one community volunteers, thirteen professional staff members, two students, two classified staff members, and two representatives of the School Board was organized last fall. The committee met on four occasions to review the District’s mission statement, create a vision statement, establish a set of shared beliefs, and generate a list of goals based on these defined guiding principles.
Once the goals were established, five technical committees composed of members of the professional and administrative staff were formed to create specific strategies and action plans necessary in achieving the goals. The technical committees defined by PDE include Academic Standards and Assessment, including Graduation Requirements, Educational Technology, Professional Education, Special Education, Student Services, and Teacher Induction.
I strongly urge you to review the District’s Strategic Plan. The proposed plan, which provides a comprehensive roadmap to the future for public education in the Township of Upper St. Clair, can be found at our District website at www.uscsd.k12.pa.us. A copy is also available in the central administration office and in the township library.
